Run your fingers over a diaper's outer cover and it clearly feels like cloth. Yet this cloth was made without weaving a single thread. No loom, no stitching.
It's called nonwoven — literally, fabric that isn't woven. Diaperman's Deep Dive Ep.26 Short breaks down the surprising process that turns plastic into cloth, in 60 seconds.
Not woven — melted and sprayed
Ordinary cloth is made by interlacing warp and weft threads. Nonwoven starts somewhere completely different: plastic is melted and sprayed out as fibers as fine as a spider web. No thread is ever made, so there's nothing to weave. The sprayed fibers pile up layer upon layer, and that stacked web itself becomes the fabric.
Hot rollers press it into cloth
Press that stacked fiber web with hot rollers, and it fuses into a single sheet of cloth. It's light, cheap, and easy to mass-produce, so it's everywhere: the outer cover of diapers, wet wipes, masks, even medical gowns. Our daily lives are already wrapped in fabric that was never woven.
The twist: it weakens when wet
But this cloth has one weakness. It's held together only at pressed points, not by interlaced threads — so when it gets soaked, it weakens and tears easily. That's exactly why a wet wipe rips when you pull it hard. How many nonwoven products are in your home? Count them and tell us in the comments!
