The Scientific Reason One White Sheet Makes a Ghost [Deep Dive - Halloween Special]

One white sheet is enough to make a person disappear. Cut two eye holes in it, and you stop looking like you. Why does the simplest Halloween costume of all erase a person so completely?

In Deep Dive episode 26, Diaperman puts the ghost costume's white cloth head-to-head with the material on the outside of a diaper — and lands on one verdict: the fabric's structure makes the ghost.

The Ghost's Secret Is Drape

The secret is drape — cloth flowing along the body erases its outline. When you can't tell a shoulder from an arm, the brain stops reading the shape as a person. A single white color then hides even shadows and texture: the folds lose their shading, so there is no visual clue left to reconstruct the body underneath.

The Three-Fabric Drop Test

Drop a cotton sheet, a piece of nonwoven, and some gauze side by side, and each one falls differently — weight, stiffness, and air resistance are all different. A ghost costume's white cloth is usually a cotton sheet: a woven fabric, made by interlacing threads. Its gentle weight is exactly what creates that flowing ghost silhouette.

The Twist: A Diaper's Outer Layer Isn't Woven at All

A diaper's outer layer is the opposite: nonwoven, a fabric that isn't woven. Nonwoven is made by the spunbond process — melted plastic is sprayed into fibers, laid down as a web, and heat-pressed flat. It is light and cheap to mass-produce, which is why it covers diapers and masks, but it weakens when wet — the same reason a disposable ghost costume goes limp in the rain. And here is the real twist: some ghost costumes today are disposable nonwoven covers. The verdict stands: the material makes the shape, and the shape makes the ghost. Have you ever made a ghost costume? Tell me in the comments!

3 Signs It's Time to Size Up Your Diaper [Diaperman]

Full video: https://youtube.com/shorts/bIbB3ONvSQw 3 Signs It's Time to Size Up Your Diaper — The Material Science of Sizing Up When a diaper keeps leaking, most parents first suspect absorbency. But surprisingly often, the culprit is the size . A diaper only works when the fit is right — if the size is too small, leaks escape through the gaps no matter how good the absorbent core is. This post breaks down the three size-up signals with material science. This video was AI-generated. What Determines Diaper Size Diaper sizes (S, M, L, etc.) look like simple size brackets, but each one is really a package of three design variables. Design variable What it means Fit (elastic bands) Stretch limit of the bands gripping the waist, thighs, and belly Absorbency design SAP capacity of the absorbent core per size Fastening structure Tape/side-wing length and closure reach In other words, sizing up means switching to "roomier fit + larger absorbent capacity + longer fa...

[Diaperman Parenting Q&A #1] Why Are Overnight Diapers So Expensive? — The Science of 12 Hours Without a Change

πŸ“Ί Watch the video on YouTube Why are overnight diapers pricier than daytime ones? It's one of the most frequently asked questions in parenting communities. In this first episode of Diaperman's Parenting Q&A, we dig into the answer through materials science. (We take questions for this corner from your YouTube comments — if there's something you'd like us to cover, leave it on our latest video!) This post was generated by AI. An Overnight Diaper Is Not Just a Thicker Diaper Many people assume an overnight diaper is simply a thicker daytime diaper. But overnight diapers are designed from the start around a different goal. Daytime diapers assume a change every 2–3 hours; overnight diapers must last 12+ hours without a single change , because nobody is changing the baby mid-sleep. That "12 hours with zero changes" target is where the price gap begins. It's not just more material — the entire structure is engineered differently so nothing leaks and the ba...

[Diaperman Ep.15] Spacesuit Velcro vs Diaper Tape — The Tech NASA Didn't Invent

πŸ“Ί Watch the video on YouTube Zero gravity. Tools floating around. But wait — look. The tools suddenly snap into place with a click! What grabbed them? Hook-and-loop fastener — the same tape you touch on diapers every day. NASA has used hook-and-loop on spacesuits since the Apollo program in the 1960s. In zero gravity there's no 'floor' to set a tool down on — a floating screwdriver that drifts away is gone for good. So NASA fastened everything with it: all over the spacesuit, tool pockets, even food trays. It was also far easier than buttons or zippers when climbing in and out of a bulky suit. This post was generated by AI. Same Principle as Diaper Tape — Thousands of Tiny Hooks Its formal name is the hook-and-loop fastener. The principle is simple: one side carries thousands of microscopic hooks, the other a looped surface. Press them together and the hooks grab the loops; pull apart and they let go. It survives thousands of fasten-unfasten cycles because the hooks...
